Russia continues to illegally hold the islands over which Japan has sovereignty. This is stated in the published annual report on the diplomacy of the Japanese foreign policy called "Blue Book".
We are talking about the Kuril Islands. In Tokyo, they are convinced that their southern part is Japanese territory and Moscow should regain control over them. The issue remains not resolved for 78 years.
"The northern territories are the islands over which Japan has a sovereignty, and they are the original territory of Japan, but at present they are illegally occupied by Russia," the report said.
At the same time, Tokyo write that they intend to resolve the issue by concluding a peace treaty with the Kremlin. The Foreign Ministry called this question priority in the relationship of Japan and Russia.
In March 2022, due to the outbreak of war against Ukraine, all negotiations on the settlement of the conflict were suspended, with which they were disagreed in Tokyo.
"The Government of Japan, experiencing a strong desire to somehow answer the sincere feelings of the elderly former inhabitants of the islands, will continue to urgently call the Russian side to resume these projects. We also protest against Russia's steps to strengthen our armed forces in four northern islands, including military exercises, On the grounds that they contradict Japan's position in relation to these islands and are unacceptable, ”they summed up at the Foreign Ministry.
