A stroke is a dangerous disease. Although age is a significant risk factor, lifestyle can also pose a threat. Doctors emphasize that some products can reduce the risk of stroke by 59%.
What food reduces the risk of stroke
Doctor Shirin Kassam states that approximately 90% of strokes are caused by atherosclerosis. In this disease, fatty plaques build up in the arteries, which can eventually cause a blockage and deprive the brain of blood supply, causing a stroke.
"We know a lot about stroke prevention because the same risk factors also cause heart attacks. Our dietary choices can help reduce these risk factors, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and being overweight or obese." - says the doctor.
Instead of focusing on single foods, the expert recommends making sure your diet includes a variety of plant-based foods.
"A high intake of foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds can create a powerful combination that effectively prevents a variety of health problems," Kassam explains.
She also added that this happens because a plant-based diet is low in saturated fat and high in fiber, vitamins, minerals and anti-inflammatory compounds that help keep cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose at a healthy level.
In addition, this type of diet is also low in processed foods, which have previously been linked to various cardiovascular problems.
What research shows
According to the doctor, following a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of a life-threatening "medical emergency" by as much as 59%.
"A study from Taiwan, focusing on Buddhist volunteers, showed that those who followed a vegetarian diet could reduce the risk of ischemic stroke by 59%," says Kassam.
However, the doctor also noted that this is not an exact science and different studies often show different results.
"Studies show that eating approximately 85-90% plant-based foods is associated with improved health, including a reduced risk of stroke and its risk factors," the doctor emphasizes.
