Sirens sounded in two Russian cities on Tuesday, April 9, warning people to evacuate immediately as flooding spread and two major rivers rose to their highest levels in 70 years.
Also, the rapid melting of snow in the Ural Mountains and Siberia has led to the expansion of some of the largest rivers flowing through Russia.
In the Russian city of Kurgan, people were warned about the need for immediate evacuation.
"We understand you very well: it is difficult to leave your property and move somewhere at the request of the local authorities. We'd better laugh at the hydrologists together and praise God for the miracle of our common salvation. But let's do it alive," said Governor Vadym Shumkov, adding that staying at home is stupid.
States of emergency have been declared in Orenburg, Kurgan and Tyumen, the main oil-producing region of Western Siberia. The peak of flooding is expected in Orenburg on Wednesday.
In the town of Zverynogolovske, Kurgan Region, the water level rose by 74 centimeters in just two hours. More than 19,000 people are at risk in Kurgan.
