The biology professor named the secrets of health and longevity

In particular, biologist Tissenbaum warned about accelerated aging due to a sedentary lifestyle.

Professor of molecular, cellular and oncological biology at the Medical School of the University of Massachusetts, USA, Heidi Thissenbaum told the Insider four principles, the observance of which will help preserve health for many years, informs UAINFO.org.

The first secret to longevity, according to Thissenbaum, is a significant reduction, or better yet, a complete rejection of added sugar. She said that studies she has worked on have proven that long-term sugar consumption affects the onset of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and Alzheimer's.

The following advice applies to those who lead a sedentary lifestyle or whose work requires sitting. "Sitting is the new smoking," Tissenbaum warned. She advised to perform at least light exercises every day in order to stress the muscles and skeleton and slow down aging.

Also, one should not forget about brain training, the specialist continued. She noted that acquiring new skills and knowledge helps preserve cognitive functions for a long time.

Thissenbaum called the diet the third secret of longevity. She advised to eat more whole foods, vegetables, fruits and berries. Such a diet helps to avoid sudden spikes in blood sugar with a subsequent rise in insulin levels.

The final secret to longevity, Thissenbaum says, is optimism and a good mood. According to her, studies have confirmed that a positive attitude helps increase life expectancy.
