Scientists have discovered a protein that may be the cause of myalgic encephalomyelitis, or chronic fatigue syndrome (CF). For a long time, specialists could not find out the source of the disease, and without it, it is impossible to create an effective treatment.
This is written by Science, reported by TSN, and informed by UAINFO.org.
The study was conducted on a 38-year-old woman who suffered from constant fatigue but did not yet have a confirmed diagnosis of CFS. The team examined tissue samples from her muscles, looking for abnormalities. Thus, a high level of a protein called WASF3 was found in the cells.
This protein can affect the work of mitochondria, the energy centers that feed cells. WASF3 causes their dysfunction by disrupting energy supply. This is why people with CFS - their muscles and cells are not getting enough nutrition.
CFS: what is this syndrome
Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome is a disease that causes severe fatigue that lasts for at least six months. Symptoms worsen during physical or mental activity and rest does not help to overcome them.
Signs of CFS:
severe exhaustion after physical or mental exercise
problems with memory or thinking
dizziness when standing up
muscle or joint pain
a dream that does not bring relaxation
headache
sore throat
enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or under the armpits
high sensitivity to light, sound, smells, food and drugs
