Scientists have reported the approach of a giant asteroid to Earth

On April 7, 2024, an asteroid named 2024 FH2 will pass by the Earth.

What is known about the flyby of asteroid 2024 FH2

According to NASA, the length of the celestial body, which is approaching the Earth for the first time in its history, is 122 meters.

At the same time, the size of asteroid 2024 FH2 and the distance from Earth at which the celestial object will approach our planet do not give NASA grounds to call it a "potentially dangerous object".

Why did scientists break the DART apparatus

In the future, as scientists hope, it will be possible to save the Earth from any dangerous asteroids. When the device fell on Dimorph, a stream of debris flew into space.

New simulations based on available data show that about 3% of all rocks ejected from the asteroid should have remained in orbit around the binary system for 80 days after the impact.

The scientists also found that approximately 5% of the 10 cm rocks flying out at a speed of 0.12 m/s and 0.18 m/s should have remained in orbit for 60 days.

The simulations did not show that any rocks could fly into space and leave the binary system.

Back in October 2022, NASA announced that the orbit of asteroid Dimorph has been changed, which means that the kinetic energy of spacecraft can save humanity from potential disaster.
