Russia threatens NATO to contain West, preparing for long-term confrontation - ISW

The Russian Foreign Ministry continues to threaten Finland and other NATO countries. Analysts are convinced that the Kremlin is thus playing for time, preparing for a long confrontation with the West.

According to the latest report from the Institute for the Study of War on April 6, the Kremlin continues to accuse Finland of “losing its independence” after joining NATO. Russian Ambassador to Finland Pavel Kuznetsov calls Helsinki's course "destructive" and declares that the Baltic region has turned into a "zone of potential escalation."

Threats as a tool of deterrence

Diplomat Kuznetsov threatens Finland and the North Atlantic Alliance as a whole, claiming that Russia “will have to respond” to an increase in NATO military forces or to the deployment of nuclear weapons in Finland. He accuses Helsinki of joining the “war party until victory over Russia” and causing a complete breakdown in Russian-Finnish relations due to “Russophobia.”

ISW believes that Russian threats against NATO member states are intended to force the West to restrain itself. Also, Russian statements about imaginary threats from the North Atlantic Alliance are aimed at creating information conditions to justify and support long-term geopolitical confrontation with the West.

Despite the artificial migration crisis created by Russia on the Russian-Finnish border in the fall of 2023 and repeated threats against Finland and NATO, Kuznetsov blames only Helsinki for the deterioration of bilateral relations. ISW notes that such actions by Moscow are part of a strategy to contain the West.
