American researchers have found that walnuts can protect against ulcerative colitis, an intestinal disease that causes persistent inflammation and ulceration in the digestive tract. They believe that the large amount of anti-inflammatory compounds in walnuts helped reduce not only stomach inflammation, but also the risk of colon cancer.
Daily consumption of walnuts protects against ulcer-causing inflammation
Over the years, research has extolled the health benefits of various nuts. Among the many well-known tree nuts, English walnuts (Juglans regia) are said to contain the highest amount of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid that can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Walnuts are also rich in beneficial compounds, such as phenolic antioxidants, which may help prevent a variety of diseases, including diabetes, neurological disorders, inflammatory diseases, and cancer. In addition, studies have shown that the high fiber content of walnuts is beneficial for people with IBD.
Patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis usually experience alternating periods of remission and exacerbation. One of the factors influencing the progression of diseases is diet.
"A walnut-enriched diet may alter the overall metabolic state of the colon toward one that is able to resist the ulcerogenic effects of DSS injury," the researchers wrote in their report.
They also said that regular consumption of walnuts can improve lipid metabolism and increase the production of antioxidants in the colon.
