In the US, companies are being checked for supplies of microchips to Russia – Bloomberg

The U.S. Treasury Department's sanctions division is investigating several U.S. and foreign companies for instances of military chip shipments that end up in the aggressor country, Russia. The investigation is part of a broader effort to target companies around the world that help Moscow circumvent sanctions imposed on it.

Bloomberg reports this, citing the words of an American official. The names of the companies being investigated are not disclosed.

One aspect of the investigation is whether U.S. financial institutions are being used to facilitate trade with sanctioned individuals.

"The Biden administration and its European allies are also reviewing distributors and subsidiaries that appear to have been selling prohibited products," it said.

Experts are now working with the companies to analyze data on more than 600 distributors who likely continued to sell banned parts to Russia. Their work is aimed at eliminating these distributors from their supply chains, the official says.

Senior officials from the Treasury and Commerce departments and the US State Department are turning to US-headquartered microelectronics manufacturers to stem the flow of chips to Russia.

Let us recall that, according to Bloomberg, Russia, despite sanctions, in 2023 imported chips manufactured by American and European companies worth over $1 billion. Most of the prohibited technologies enter the Russian Federation through re-export from third countries, including China, Turkey and the UAE .

As OBOZ.UA reported, the United States proposed creating a special center for coordinating efforts to stop the supply of American semiconductors, artificial intelligence and quantum technologies to countries such as China, Russia, Iran and North Korea. Lawmakers are asking for $25 million to fund such a department in 2025.
