Life threatening: Somali pirates will be put on trial for the first time

The Indian Navy handed over 35 captured Somali pirates to the police in Mumbai. They will be the first to be prosecuted under India's anti-piracy law of 2022.

This is reported by Reuters, informs UAINFO.org with reference to "RBK-Ukraine".

India, the largest national power in the Gulf of Aden and the northern Arabian Sea region, captured pirates from the cargo ship Rouen last week, three months after it was hijacked off the coast of Somalia.

Since November, pirates have hijacked or attempted to hijack more than 20 ships, leading to increased insurance and security costs for global companies.

Pirates captured by Indian commandos face life imprisonment. They will be the first to be prosecuted under India's anti-piracy law of 2022, which allows the navy to apprehend and arrest pirates on the high seas.

The Somalis used the Rouen as their "base ship" for attacks on other vessels, the Navy said. Special forces rescued all 17 crew members.

India responded to 18 incidents, deploying 21 ships and 5,000 personnel in turn, boarding and investigating more than 1,000 vessels. Her unprecedented presence resulted in the deployment of more than a dozen warships within days.
