US Army soldier arrested on charges of selling classified information to China related to the country's military capabilities
This is reported by AP with a message to representatives of the Ministry of Justice.
Sergeant Corbein Schultz, an intelligence analyst, was charged with six counts of conspiracy to obtain and disclose military defense information and bribery of a government official, it said. The 24-year-old was arrested on the Tennessee-Kentucky border after the allegations were made public.
"The men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces dedicate their lives to maintaining our national security. Our national defense information protection laws are critical to that mission and must be enforced. The illegal sharing of national defense information puts our country, our fellow citizens at risk , service members and our allies," said U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee Henry C. Leventis.
According to the indictment, Schultz, who had a top-secret security clearance, allegedly conspired with an individual referred to as "Conspirator A" to leak various documents, photographs and other national defense materials beginning in June 2022. The indictment alleges that Schultz was recruited not only because of his security clearance, but also because he was tasked with collecting classified US military information.
Some of the information Schultz allegedly passed on to the individual included information related to a highly mobile artillery missile system, hypersonic equipment, research into future US military developments, and research into military exercises and operations in major countries such as China.
The indictment states that Schultz was initially asked to provide documents detailing the lessons to be learned from Russia's war with Ukraine and how they could be applied to US aid to Taiwan in the event of an attack. It is noted that Shultz was paid $200 for this information.
"Conspirator A," described in the indictment as a foreigner allegedly living in Hong Kong, later suggested that Schultz could make more money if he handed over top-secret material.
In total, Schultz received at least 14 payments totaling $42,000.
"The defendant and his accomplice also discussed recruiting another U.S. military member to join their conspiracy and provide additional national defense information to cover up their illegal conduct," the prosecutor said.
