The German Ministry of Defense is investigating the leak of intelligence after Russian media published a conversation between high-ranking officials of the Air Force about the possible deployment of Taurus long-range missiles in Ukraine.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on the sidelines of a meeting with Pope Francis in the Vatican, called the incident "a very serious matter."
The Federal Bureau of Military Counterintelligence will investigate, a Defense Department spokeswoman said in a written response to Bloomberg News. She did not comment on the exact time and content of the intercepted conversations.
For the German military, this is an embarrassing incident, especially since there have been discussions about urgent modernization for some time.
The ministry made the move after Der Spiegel reported that media platform Russia Today obtained a 30-minute audio recording between Air Force Commander Ingo Gerharts and several high-ranking officers in which they discussed the possible delivery of the Taurus to Kyiv.
Among other things, it was about how the German military can help in the training of Ukrainian pilots and programming of weapons systems.
It will be recalled that the leader of the majority in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, announced a bipartisan agreement on a package of bills that resolve the issue of the US budget.
