Queen frontman Freddie Mercury's London estate, Garden Lodge, has been put up for auction. The starting price of the house is from $38 million.
The estate is now owned by Mercury's close friend Mary Austin, who received most of his inheritance and looked after the estate after the singer's death in 1991. The interior of the house was created according to the tastes and desires of Mercury, it reflects his soul. According to Austin, the musician wanted to have his own place in London, where he could quietly write music without the distraction of journalists.
The walls of the house are painted in citrus yellow paint, and in the Mercury dressing room there are impressive art deco inlaid mirrors. Such a combination was created exactly according to the taste of the singer.
Just outside the door of the house is a Japanese-style garden with magnolia trees, a wooden pergola and a carp pond. The design of the house was specially created to feel like outside the city, and not in the very center of London - the estate is located only 10 minutes from the popular Kensington High Street. The garden was Freddie Mercury's personal space for reflection - loved ones did not disturb him when they saw him daydreaming there.
The house has eight bedrooms. There's also a dining room on the first floor, where Mercury hosted dinner parties with planned menus and handwritten seating plans (there was a separate seat for the singer's cat, Oscar). Mercury himself participated in the design of the dining room - he made drawings on the wall.
It was Mercury who created the design with pink, green and yellow elements on the wall.
The largest area of the first floor is occupied by the living room with a wooden floor, yellow walls and a decorative stone fireplace. In this room stood Mercury's grand piano, on which he wrote the famous song "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Freddie Mercury's room is located on the floor above. The corridor to it is covered with a thick cream-colored carpet. In the dressing room, instead of walls, there are floor-to-ceiling mirrors, behind which cabinets are skillfully hidden. It was there that the musician kept his bright stage costumes. The property is special because it has a strong personality of Freddie Mercury himself - for example, the soft pink marble and green bathtub in the guest bathroom or the theatrical atmosphere of the living room.
Mary Austin admits that she decided to sell the house after the Sotheby's auction - last year, several personal belongings of Freddie Mercury were sold there for $50 million. Part of the proceeds were donated to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
The woman says that she is selling the house with warmth in her heart. She hopes the next owner will take the same personal approach that Freddie had.
