It's no secret that high sugar consumption can negatively affect our overall health. However, researchers now strongly recommend not to consume more than one portion of a sweet drink per week — each additional dose significantly increases the risk of developing a dozen diseases, writes the News Letter.
In a new study, scientists from China and the United States conducted a comprehensive review of the effects of sugar on the human body. The results of the study suggest that higher sugar consumption is associated with a number of negative consequences for the body, including diabetes, obesity, caries and even some types of cancer.
After analyzing the collected data, scientists came to the conclusion that people should consume no more than one sweet drink per week. What's more, each additional drink with sugar, as the study shows, increases the chances of developing several diseases at once. In general, scientists were able to connect the use of sugar with 45 negative consequences for the human body.
In total, scientists processed the data of 73 meta-analyses, including more than 8.5 thousand different studies. Now the authors of the study assure that the consumption of large amounts of sugar is somehow related to:
diabetes;
gout;
obesity;
high blood pressure;
heart attacks;
strokes;
asthma;
caries;
depression;
premature death;
some types of cancer (in particular breast cancer of the pancreas).
The researchers then looked separately at sugar-sweetened beverages and found "moderate evidence" that people who consumed significant amounts of them were more likely to be overweight.
In addition, scientists found that each additional sugary drink per week increases the risk of developing gout by 4%, coronary heart disease by 17%, and increases the risk of death by 4%.
The researchers also found that every 25g increase in fructose intake per day was associated with a 22% increased risk of pancreatic cancer. The authors of the study insist that humanity needs to reconsider its consumption of sugar and addiction to sweet drinks, because, in the end, all this affects our health.
