Trying to lose weight can be difficult, the expert explained, especially if you can't figure out why the diet isn't working.
A person on a diet needs to eat more protein in order to achieve the goal of losing a few extra kilos, informs UAINFO.org with reference to UNIAN.
As British doctor Michael Mosley points out, trying to lose weight can be difficult, especially if you can't figure out why the diet isn't working.
"Even if you lead an active lifestyle and follow a healthy diet, sometimes extra weight just doesn't want to go," he described the situation of many who are losing weight, writes the Daily Mail.
In this regard, the specialist shared one simple way to lose extra pounds, and it consists only in the use of additional protein.
He explained that when we lose weight, we lose not only muscle, but also fat, and it is muscle that helps burn calories. Unlike fat, muscle burns energy throughout the day, which means that when you lose muscle, your basal metabolism (the calories you burn at rest) also slows down. This means that after stopping the diet, it will be more difficult to keep the weight off.
"So what can you do to preserve muscle and metabolic rate if you want to lose weight? Make sure you eat enough protein, because it is necessary to maintain muscle mass," said the expert.
"If you want to lose weight safely and effectively, make sure you consume at least 50g of protein per day (good sources are meat, fish, eggs, tofu and whole grains) and that your daily protein intake is spread across the three main meals, as that way it's better absorbed," Mosley explained.
He noted that you should also exercise regularly, especially weight-bearing exercises such as push-ups and squats, to maintain muscle.
