In the course of a new large-scale study, scientists received convincing evidence that lifestyle plays a huge role in the occurrence of cancer.
We may be on the verge of changing recommendations for the prevention of cancer worldwide, informs UAINFO.org with reference to NV.ua.
How was the research conducted?
Experts used data from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) as a basis, which helped to identify seven important lifestyle choices that reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer by a whopping 30%.
Researchers from the University of Newcastle in Great Britain took already known factors and applied them to reduce the risk of cancer in 94,000 people with an average age of 56.
These data also included dietary patterns, physical fitness, and participants' body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference.
What exactly were the participants to do?
All participants received points for following seven recommendations:
Eat no more than three servings of red meat
According to the World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRF), the main recommendation for cancer prevention as we know it is to eat no more than a moderate amount of red meat, such as beef, pork and lamb, and to reduce your consumption of processed meat to zero.
Scientists from the latest study once again confirmed this painful recommendation for many meat eaters, the less red meat, the better.
Diet with fiber
Eat a balanced diet with enough fiber and avoid sugary drinks.
Dietary fiber, found primarily in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, may have powerful cancer-fighting properties, and it has properties that help maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
Two and a half hours of physical exercise per week
Physical activity is your recipe for success in keeping cancer away.
The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommends a minimum of 2 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours per week of moderate physical activity, and 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes per week of vigorous physical activity.
Over seven days, that translates to about 21-42 minutes of daily moderate exercise and just over 10-21 minutes of daily vigorous exercise.
Maintaining a normal weight
The American Cancer Society recommends maintaining a healthy weight throughout life.
The best way to maintain a healthy weight is to balance how much you eat with how active you are.
If you are overweight, the best way to get to a healthy weight is to limit your calorie intake and burn more calories through physical activity.
Restrictions on fast food
Fast food may be tempting and more convenient, but over time this type of eating can have a negative impact on your health and lead to weight gain, which can, as noted, lead to cancer.
Breast feeding
There's also a strange recommendation on that list that includes breastfeeding, but how does that reduce cancer, you ask?
Scientists suggest that this may be the result of hormonal changes during lactation, excess estrogen is associated with an increased risk of cancer. And breastfeeding is a way to reduce this negative factor to which the body is exposed throughout life.
Refusal of alcohol
For alcoholics, complete abstinence is another step to reduce the risk of cancer
While earlier research indicated that moderation was the key factor, scientists are now calling for complete abstinence from alcohol.
According to their findings, it breaks down into a chemical called acetaldehyde, which can cause DNA damage, which in turn can lead to cancer.
